Asprovalta is a seaside town in the municipality of Volvi, located at the northeastern edge of the Thessaloniki regional unit. It is one of the most notable summer tourist resorts in Macedonia, and its coastal front is often referred to as the “Greek Riviera.” According to the 2011 census, it has 2,838 inhabitants. Asprovalta lies east of Thessaloniki on the western shores of the Strymonian Gulf and is accessible via the Egnatia Highway. Its beach is awarded the Blue Flag every year. Ecclesiastically, it belongs to the Holy Metropolis of Serres and Nigrita.
Archaeological excavations have revealed organized residential installations dating from the late Classical to early Hellenistic periods, and it is known that during Roman times the ancient Via Egnatia passed through the area. Just east of Asprovalta lie the ruins of a Roman station called Pennana. According to a document from the archive of Simonopetra Monastery, the settlement “Aspri Valta” was founded in the early 16th century on the southern slopes of Mount Kerdylia.
After the Minor Asia Catastrophe, 54 families from Renkioi (Ofrinio) in the Troad, near the Dardanellia, settled in the area, bringing with them many heirlooms, including the library of the Ofrinio school. The Asia Minor refugees developed the settlement, and later their compatriots who had emigrated to the United States provided financial support for the construction of a stone school and a church in Asprovalta to house their treasured relics. The growth of seaside tourism in the mid‑20th century led to the expansion of the settlement with many holiday homes and hotel facilities.
