Camera Position

Ano Stavros is a large settlement in the eastern part of the Thessaloniki regional unit and forms a local community of the municipality of Volvi. It is located 81 kilometers from Thessaloniki. According to the 2011 census, the settlement has 796 inhabitants. Ano Stavros is built on the northern foothills of Mount Stratoniko, overlooking the Strymonian Gulf. In the area, there was a settlement since antiquity known as Vormiskos.
Documents also mention the existence of a settlement during the Byzantine period, which served as a stop for travelers heading to Mount Athos. The name Stavros is recorded from 1705 and is believed to be connected to ancient Stageira. In 1908, the residents purchased from the Ottoman administration the coastal fields surrounding the Strymonian Gulf.
After the 1924 population exchange, Greek refugees from the village of Katirli in Nicomedia settled in the area. The state granted them the land of present-day Stavros, expropriating it from the inhabitants of Ano Stavros. In 1931, the coastal area of Stavros was officially named Stavros, while the old settlement received its current name. With the administrative reorganization of 1942, Ano Stavros was transferred from the Chalkidiki regional unit to the Thessaloniki regional unit. From 1947 to 1950, the village was evacuated due to the Greek Civil War, and the residents spent the winters in Stavros.
